A man claims he plunged a butcher’s knife into his flatmate’s back by accident.

The 27-year-old Bangladeshi national is standing trial for assault in the High Criminal Court.

The 34-year-old victim, who required two operations for his injuries, claimed he had no idea why he was attacked. “I did not even have an argument with him, we were good friends,” the victim told prosecutors. “I was cooking chicken for breakfast and felt a sharp pain in my shoulder when someone stabbed me from behind.

“I looked backwards and saw my roommate running out with a butcher’s knife in his hand.

“I do not know why he stabbed me because we were not even fighting and had no issues.

“Luckily my neighbor took me to hospital where I had to undergo an operation.

“I also went to Bangladesh and had another operation because my right hand was not fully functional.”

The incident happened last May at the apartment they shared in Manama.

In his statement, the alleged assailant said the two men had argued because the victim wanted to evict him from the property. However, he claimed he did not intentionally stab him.

“My roommate approached me several times and told me he wanted me to leave the apartment because he was going to rent it out to other people,” the defendant told prosecutors. “I did not pay any attention because I did not think he was serious.

“However, I found out he really wanted to kick me out and I became angry.

“I confronted him about what he wanted to do before we got into a heated argument.

“He was shouting at me and I held a butcher’s knife to scare him.

“I then accidentally hit him in the shoulder and he fell to the ground and was bleeding and screaming.

“I ran out of the apartment and turned myself in to authorities.”

The trial has been adjourned until Jan. 28 for the defendant to attend the next hearing.
