A delegation from the Sharjah Women’s Sport Foundation, SWSF, led by Nada Askar Al Naqbi, Director-General of the SWSF, recently visited the Russian Federation to learn valuable lessons from its world-class sporting bodies.

As part of the SWSF’s vision to support women in Sharjah and the UAE in various sports, the trip focussed on potential collaborations with Russian institutions, in a bid to benefit from the best practices in women’s sports.

In a meeting with Boris Grishin, Representative of the Russian Ministry of Sport, the SWSF delegation highlighted the scope of their programmes and activities, listed their efforts and shared their areas of expertise.

In another meeting with the Russian Olympic Committee, the delegation showcased the SWSF’s future plans to develop women’s sports in the UAE, particularly in Sharjah.

The SWSF also took part in the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority’s participation at the Leisure Moscow Fair, where it promoted the annual women’s sporting tournaments organised in Sharjah to visitors of the exhibition.

Al Naqbi expressed her delight about their visit and commended the efforts of Russian sports organisations in organising meetings and visits, which aim to create the ideal environment to develop women’s sports.

"The SWSF’s efforts are aligned with the wise directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, SCFA, and Chairperson of the SWSF. Her Highness’s constant advice is for us to keep up to date with the best practices in international women’s sports and incorporate them into Sharjah’s and the UAE’s sporting landscape, to nurture a new generation of professional Emirati sportswomen," Al Naqbi said.

"During this visit, we explored the rich expertise of one of the leading countries in the field of women’s sports. Russia prides itself on its women’s achievements in all fields, and celebrates them. Therefore, we were keen to explore Russia’s expertise, while nurturing the talents of our female athletes, as it will help us expand our horizons to enhance the stature of women’s sports in the UAE," she added.

While in Russia, Al Naqbi extended an official invitation to attend the world fencing champion, Lana Zadonskaya, to visit Sharjah and share her journey in the sport of fencing with Emirati athletes.

Boris Grishin expressed his appreciation for the SWSF’s visit, while commending its efforts.

Vladimir Sengleev, Director-General of the Russian Olympic Committee, welcomed the SWSF delegation and praised the foundation for playing an instrumental role in the field of women’s sports, not just in the Arab world, but also globally.

The SWSF was established under an Emiri decree in November 2016 by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher.
