Sheikha Moza Leads Qatar Foundation's National Sport Day Activities

A number of high profile officials led by Qatar Foundation (QF) Chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser took part in various activities organised in Education City for QF's celebrations of National Sport Day in Doha on Tuesday.

HH Sheikha Moza led the 2km walkathon which kicked off the celebrations. She was joined by President of the Qatar Olympic Committee HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al Thani, Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada, Minister of State HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al Kuwari and Alistair Routledge, president of ExxonMobil Qatar.

Aside from the top government and QF officials, the fun walk was also participated by families and visitors from different expatriate communities. The walkathon around Education City also provided the participants a quick tour around the impressive structures within the campus including the Qatar National Library, QF headquarters and the various universities. It concluded in front of the Ceremonial Court which was also the starting point of the 40-km cycle event and the 50-km ultra marathon.

HH Sheikha Moza toured the various booths set up on the campus and tried out one of the stationary bikes set-up at the Ceremonial Court for the outdoor spinning activity.

"Our National Sport Day programme highlights QF's commitment to creating an active, sports-loving society, while encouraging the public to make long-lasting health and lifestyle changes. QF's celebrations, which are designed to cater for all ages and athletic abilities, are part of a wider, year-round and community-inspired campaign, aimed at fostering a socially-engaged society and promoting the physical and mental well-being of all," said Machaille al Naimi, QF president of community development.

This year, QF's National Sport Day events were held in different locations within Education City. An activity called 'The Challenge' was held in Al Shaqab while a range of activities was enjoyed by children and adults at QF's Oxygen Park.
Swimming for children with special needs, goal ball-a football activity for the blind, squash tournament, slalom football, among others, were hosted in QF Recreation Center. While more outdoor games were held in Green Spine and a range of ladies-only activities were held at the Education City Student Centre.

The farmers' market which opens in Education City every weekend was also among the featured attractions.

"This occasion is one of the most important annual celebrations in Qatar that gives opportunity for residents to know what different sporting facilities and activities are available here in the country. We appreciate this amazing effort of Qatar government to advocate health and fitness in such a large scale," said one of the walkathon participants.

"The Sport Day is truly a family affair that lets us choose from a range of sporting events in different venues of the country," said another visitor.

QF chief communications officer Mayan Zebeib commented:"As a leading agent of change in Qatar, QF actively participates and supports national initiatives such as National Sport Day. We're absolutely delighted to welcome so many people to Education City today to share our celebrations. Our diverse range of activities ensures the local population is given access to some of the country's best sporting and recreational facilities."
